If you do not follow these directions, you take the risk of your application getting lost and not being considered. You will receive a brief email confirming receipt. See Mrs. Gurley if you do not receive a confirmation email.

Responsibilities of Host Family
While staying in Virginia Beach
- In selecting host families, preference will be given to students who traveled to the destination.
- In selecting host families, preference will be given to students currently studying the home language of the guest.
- Academics, attendance, and discipline record are considered.
- Host families are required to attend one host family meeting with the chaperon in advance of the exchange.
- Prior to selection, a GSWLA staff member will visit the home of the applicant. The primary objective is to see that our visitors will be in a warm, welcoming, and clean environment. The staff member will use a checklist and make notes regarding the general condition of the home, pets, sleeping arrangements, and any safety concerns.
Responsibilities of Host Family
- Have a separate bed for the guest, but not necessarily a separate bedroom.
- Spend time with your guest (specifically in the evenings and on weekends when there are not school or school-related activities).
- Provide transportation for activities when transportation is not provided by the school.
- Student drivers must follow Virginia Laws for Teen Driving Restrictions.
- Provide breakfast daily and any other meals that are not provided as a part of school activities and fieldtrips.
- Activities planned by the host family should be paid for by the host family.
While staying in Virginia Beach
- There will be free time on the weekends for hosts and guests to plan activities together.
- There will be day trips to Virginia Beach and surrounding cities. Host students will be able to participate in some, but not all fieldtrips.
- All fieldtrip costs for visiting students will be covered.
- When possible, all fieldtrip costs will be covered for hosting students.
- Do not plan any activities that require you to sign a liability waiver releasing the provider of responsibility due to injury.
- If an emergency occurs, contact the GSWLA coordinator and the delegation chaperon.
Do not cover any medical expenses. Medical expenses are the responsibility of the visiting chaperon.

- Dates of the exchange are subject to change.
- Host applications will be forwarded to the guest families of the travel destination.
- School missed during the exchange is noted in the school record as ACTIVITY and does not count as an absence.
- The students are responsible for making arrangements with their teachers for missed assignments.
- Students earn 4 cultural events for hosting students.
