The Packing List
Please keep in mind that laundry can be done at all of the hotels and at the homes. I recommend you pack 7 days worth of clothing. Remember, your checked bag can't weigh more than 50 pounds and you will be buying things to bring home. Keep it under weight!! Also, stay away from items that identify you as an American, like shirts with American flags on them.
1. Sturdy and comfortable walking shoes
2. A jacket (windbreaker type)
3. a sweatshirt or button up sweater for layers
4. One or two long sleeved shirts
5. T-shirts or other short sleeve tops for 7 days
6. One nice top that goes with your khakis for meeting VIPs (Tallwood polo?)
7. A pair of jeans
8. A pair of khakis
8. A couple pairs of shorts
9. Socks and underwear
10. A bathing suit
11. A passport holder that can be hidden under your clothes (Do I really have to say to make sure the passport is in there too?)
12. Rechargeable batteries (no extra batteries may be packed) and the charger. Batteries must be in the device or they will be thrown out
13. A normal flashdrive (no flashdrives shaped like pigs, or surfboards, they tend to get tossed out by TSA; I've no idea why)
14. An adaptor plug so you can charge your various devices - click here for a suggested one from Mr. Falls
15. A bottle of sunscreen (we are visiting a desert, duh!)
16. A backpack for carrying items (trust me ladies, this is much better than a purse!) Be sure it is comfortable to wear on your back or front.
17. A hat or other head covering (again, we are visiting a desert people!)
18. Sunglasses (Do I have to say it again? Desert!!)
19. A camera with lots of storage space (maybe pack multiple cards)
20. A phone with wi-fi or an ipod with wi-fi (so ET can phone home) See the Calling Home section below
21. Hosting gift - see section below
22. A travel towel for the Dead Sea - LLBean has some that are not very heavy and that are easy to pack. Amazon always is a good place to look for deals too! This is worth the extra money ($10 - $20)just for the weight and the space.
23. Plane sleep pillow and eye mask - recommended for comfort, but not required by any means
24. Want to bring a ball to play with? Be sure to let all of the air out of the ball or TSA will do it for you and not in a nice way.
25. One formal outfit for the formal dance
Have suggestions for the packing list? Email me ([email protected]) and I'll add them!

Money
- Get your student a debit card or credit card - highly recommended as there are no exchange rates on a card purchase and we'll use an ATM to get cash which also has no exchange rates and only costs about $2 per transaction (this is WAY cheaper than an exchange booth and easier on everyone).
- Go to your bank or call to get a debit card (note: some banks let you set a limit on how much money is available for the card)
- Visas work every where in my experience, but Mastercards should be fine as well.
- Get the card ASAP and force them to use it - make them buy the gas, the groceries, etc (trust me, you do not want a phone call in the middle of the night from your child telling you they have no money in a foreign country because they don't know their pin and locked the card for 24 hours)
- Have the student write the pin as a note in their phone or in their ipod. I recommend listing it as a phone number for Uncle Moe - 757-273-0000 and be sure to list some other aunts and grandparents to throw anyone off the scent if they steal the phone/ ipod.
- Be sure to tell the bank the card will be used in Washington DC, New York City, and the entire country of Israel. They will want to know the dates of the trip. I always extend the trip by a week on the end because you just never know what can happen on a trip.
- New Tip: My bank told me that sometimes they will waive the transaction fee for students traveling overseas for school purposes. You should ask your bank if they do this!
- I recommend $100 - 200 cash (American money) for anything they can't use a card on while they are state side, like the subway in NYC. If they have a card, they can always get more cash as well.
- As for the amount of spending money, the Academy recommends $200-300 in spending money, but considering the length of the trip I'd say more like $400-500. That covers extra food, and whatever else they could possibly want. I include the $100 American cash in that number.
- For the students: If you mess up your pin three times it LOCKS YOUR CARD FOR 24 HOURS!!! There is no way to unlock it save time. If you put in the wrong pin the first time, and a second time, STOP USING IT AND CHECK YOUR PIN!!!
Calling Home
You have a couple of choices on how to keep in touch while your student is overseas. I've listed them below:
1. Get an expensive international phone
2. Get an expensive international calling plan
3. Make sure your student has a phone/ipod with wi-fi and use one of the methods below to talk
1. Get an expensive international phone
2. Get an expensive international calling plan
3. Make sure your student has a phone/ipod with wi-fi and use one of the methods below to talk
- Facebook chat/google chat
- Skype
- iphone to iphone you can text each other
- Magic Jack app recommended by Mr. Falls - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/free-calls-with-magicjack/id463926997?mt=8
Hosting Gift
You will be staying with a family who will be feeding you, giving you a place to sleep, and providing a once in a life time chance to see another culture. A gift for all that is just good manners. These should be items that represent you and VA Beach. Here are some suggestions below:
- tourist stuff - mugs from the aquarium, cute dust collectors from the art museum (or really any museum around here!)
- Magnets - I'm a huge fan of the magnet, practical and it gives them something to look at every day that makes them think of you!
- A scrapbook - pictures of all of your favorite places and tourist spots in the area
- A calendar - for $20-$35 you can get an awesome calendar using pictures you took (make sure you select the Jewish calendar feature!) I recommend Kodak, I've used them a number of times and I'm always happy. Click here for more information
- Food - keep it kosher, though not all Jews follow this practice so wait to see what your host family practices before ruling this out. Stay away from wine and other alcoholic products due both to kosher laws and the fact it will be carried by your 15-17 year old.
- An American stuffed animal - I always put a beanie baby flag bear in there, or something else that screams America with flags and eagles
- A history book - $12 at Barnes and Noble for a small book with lots of pictures about the history of our area. It is okay that it is in English.
- Have a great idea to share with the group? Email me ([email protected]) and it will appear up here!
Tips for Visiting the Western Wall (Kotel) and other religious sites
Tips for the Kotel
Masada
The Dead Sea
- Prepare for security checks – Be ready to have your bags searched. Also, have your passport on you.
- Follow all instructions by security
- Dress appropriately/ modestly – Don’t wear shorts (this is why you are taking a pair of khakis)
- Gentlemen and married ladies must cover their heads - head coverings are offered for free at the Kotel
- Taking pictures – Be respectful of religious events. No pictures can be taken on the Sabbath (from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.)
- No cell phones may be used during the Sabbath as well
- Everything I have read states that even those who are non Jewish can place a prayer in the wall. I will continue to check on this as we would not wish to offend what is the holiest of all Jewish religious sites. If you are Jewish you clearly have no worries in this regard! :)
- For more information click here
Masada
- Bring sunscreen with a high SPF!
- Shorts and t-shirts are a must for today ( you might want to bring that windbreaker though!)
- Hat and sunglasses
- I have found no special rules for this site beyond the common sense ones that we use to visit all historical sites
- For more information click here
The Dead Sea
- Bathing suit
- Hat and sunglasses
- water bottle (I'm sure we'll have an empty one by then)
- I have found no special rules for this site, but again, common sense people!
